PR's

5K: 21:26 (2005)

4 mile: 28:10 (2005)

10K: 43:33 (2010)

10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

1/2 marathon: 1:34:31 (2011)

marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

They had 3 races, the runners 1/2, a walkers 1/2 and a 5K.  The race was run on a 32 mile bike path -- actually the California International Marathon runs a bit on this course.  It was pretty flat, a few short hills but nothing serious.  The race got started 20 mins late - which was not fun.  They told us "we will be starting late so you have time to jog around a few more minutes".  What I heard was "we will be starting late so you have time to run over to the bushes for one last bathroom stop" - about 15 of use (2 women 13 men) took off to the woods ;-)  it was pretty funny.  They had a bagpipe procession that was pretty cool - but would have been cooler if it had happened 10 mins before when the race was supposed to start ....

Finally, we took off, I started pretty close to the front, because I knew this was bike path and getting a good position was critical since there was not a lot of room.

My splits:

mile 1: 6:58 (way too fast - I backed off after this first mile)

mile 2: 7:18 (good pace - there was a woman running next to me who was already starting to sound like she was having an asthma attack - I really felt like saying - "you do realize this is a 13 mile race don't you? -- she actually hung with me until mile 5, breathing super hard the whole time, I never saw her at the finish).

mile 3: 7:18

mile 4: 7:18

mile 5: 7:18 (starting to see a trend here)

mile 6: 7:18 (wow).

mile 7: 7:16 (finally out of my rut ;-))

mile 8: 7:16 (new rut)

mile 9: 7:19 (gu - feeling tired, but told myself I did not even have to do a fast finish, I just needed to hang on for a PR) - was running with about 4 guys, I wanted to drop them, but I was scared because I was getting tired)

mile 10: 7:22 (water stop to wash down the gu, it took me two tries to grab water, both times the water spilled all over me -- it was warm so it felt good).

mile 11: 7:11 (I want to stop running - tried to figure out if I could still PR if I walked in, unfortunately, I did not think so -- the wind started picking up here - headwind, of course).

mile 12: 7:17 (windy - no shade, I felt bad)

mile 13: 7:10 (tried really hard to get the woman in front of me, but my legs were getting pretty rubbery)

0.1: 42 (tried to do a sprint -- still couldn't catch her!!!)

Very very easy cool-down jog, I was so tired ... but pretty pleased.  Wished I could have found 7 more seconds to break 1:35, but a 1:30 pr is not bad so I won't complain!

Congratulations to all the PROVO 1/2 bloggers - it looks like you had a great day.

GOOD LUCK in EUGENE ALLIE!!!

Great job Bonnie! Isn't 9th overall your lucky number?! : )

Great job, Bonnie! Congratulations on the PR and the age division placing. You ran a great race.

I have to admit that it did my heart good to read that you wanted to stop running in mile 11. I often feel that way with a couple miles left in a race or a long run.

From MichelleL on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 16:53:55 from 67.41.226.109

Nice Job! The splits are awesome, I especially like the 7:10 at the end. You are a strong runner! What was your overall goal for today? A PR?

From Snoqualmie on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 17:03:30 from 24.18.192.33

Bonnie, you are such a spectacular runner!! Congratulations on a great job!

Thank you so much!

Kim - 9 is indeed my lucky number -- I coulda had 8 today!! I was surprised it was my lucky number in a city with almost double the population of Tucson ;-).

Chris! thank you so much. I was pretty surprised ... like a metronome today! I think that is what no garmin gets me!

Smooth -- xxoo thank you.

Julie - I can't wait until we can run together!!

CiC - thank you! I usually save that feeling for races!

Michelle - interesting you should ask that. Basically, I wasn't really going for a PR. My goal was to run a conservative 1st half and then see if I could "PR for the second half" - I wanted to run about 7:20's and then see if I could get close to 10K pace for the second half. My first stupid mile split threw that idea out of the window (since I figured it was going to cost me a lot at the end), so then I just said, "well, lets just run what I can and see what happens" -- when I saw the 5 miles of 7:18s I then knew that all I needed to do was "hang on" the last 4 miles, no fast finish or anything. But, of course, by the last 4 miles I just wanted it to be over ... so I picked it up.

Sno -- thank you so much!! 30 secs off of your PR in the rain on a hilly course is no trivial matter yourself!! Especially given your week. xxoo

Way to go, Bonnie!!! Awesome job. Congrats on a well earned PR!

From MichelleL on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 19:20:09 from 67.41.226.109

Funny, I wanted mine to be over too, but that didn't help me run faster at the end. Nice job again Bonnie!~

From CookieLegs on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 19:25:41 from 71.36.87.104

Awesome fast running today, and congratulations on the PR and 2nd in your AG!!

From JD on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 19:54:41 from 32.176.167.101

Congratulations! You're a strong runner to be able to speed up at the end like that. Great race/PR!

From Burt on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 22:33:55 from 98.177.220.145

Hey prof! That's a 6.3 second standard deviation. Way to go! Tell montelepsy and kungfublonde that I love them.

From Tracy on Sat, May 01, 2010 at 22:39:35 from 173.23.75.96

Sounds like you had a spectacular race! Congrats on the PR. You are so FAST!

From Nan on Sun, May 02, 2010 at 10:15:07 from 174.51.250.151

Wow, great race! Love the consistency and amazing ability to hang on all the way to the finish. Its all those high mileage weeks that gave you the strength to hang on. I often just go out as fast as I dare and then "hang on" as long as I can but my splits almost always get slower near the end. Maybe you can teach me a lesson in consistency.

From vinh on Sun, May 02, 2010 at 15:30:40 from 24.211.101.133

I just discovered that my niece ran the same race. My sister (my niece's mom) said that my niece had run a half marathon on Saturday, and I knew that she lived in more or less the Sacramento area, and so I checked the results today and sure enough, it was the same race. I should really get in touch with my niece and talk to her about running.

Sorry not blogged comments internet problems

Well done Bonnie fantastic PR I am sure you have reflected on this and you are very happy..... we all set goals that are sometimes so very slightly out our reach and even though we pr its not good enough but this is what make's us competitive not with others but ourself if we are ever happy with it we may give up

Love the write up well done Bonnie :)))))
