10K: 43:33 (2010)

10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

Trail run ... first one of 2014.  It was wonderful, for me.  Even the multitude of people on "my" trail did not get me down!  I saw my neighbor with her horses -- I saw huge families of hikers.  All got a happy new year from me.

Then, I got home, and within 15 mins Dean came home - from his trail run.  he said, "well, I got the first fall out of the way" - and showed me his hand.  It was bad, real bad.  We trudged up the hill to our neighbors (both are physicians) to see what they thought about whether or not he needed stitches -- Amy (the horse-rider) was still out on the trails -- her husband, said, "yup, you need stitches, let me see if I can find Amy's kit, we probably have some sutures around here somewhere, I can sew that right up for you" :)  Well, he couldn't find Amy's stuff, so we ended up getting ready to sit for a while in an Urgent Care ... All is well now, Dean is stitched up, he has his pain meds, he has his antibiotics, and he can take the rest of the week off.  The doctor who sewed him up said, "hmmmm, looks like hamburger" :)

Happy New Year bloggers -- see I am trying to be a good blogger this year!

1:52... same run as last week, but I added on some trails, because, like, who wouldn't? :)

I know, here it is only the 5th of January, and already, my new "keep up with blogging" New Year's resolution is amiss.  I blame it on Dean, and Ben and Jerry's (B&J was on sale, Dean bought some, even though it has been banned from the house for the past 3 months).  It is sort of the type of drug that makes me not want to participate in society, and, I have heard, it is a gateway treat.  A little B&J and the next thing you know, you are laying on the couch eating Nacho's Bel Grande, and Cheeto's.

Happy Sunday!

1:54:32.  Longer route than last week, mainly because I ran a few more loops of trail.  Still probably not 14 miles, but likely either last weekends route was short or this one is longer.  Not worried, just running lots of hills, with varied terrian, and enjoying the weather!

Easy run ...

Drove up to Phoenix to see our therapist, John.  He said I needed to get regular massage again. My back pain is likely originating in the joint of my greater trochantor (not good, because it is likely the arthritis) -- he worked me over, I could bend over and get about 2 inches from my toes after he was finished (I could only get to my knees before -- that is pretty bad!).

Felt much better afterward, even though I am covered in bruises :)

Took zula (the cat) to the vet, we are having "litter box issues".  She may have colitis, we will try drugs and a new diet before resorting to "retraining" which won't be fun for anyone.

Partially my usual run -- with about 45 mins of trail running thrown in -- it was busy busy busy out on the trails.  There was some sort of mountain biking "event" going on (I asked someone what it was, and they said, "free hot dogs and beer" -- so there you go :).  I did not mind (like I might normally mind) that the bikes interrupted the "flow" of my run - it was a nice day, I was running easy anyway - and everyone was super nice.  Plus, it really only affected about 2 miles of my run.

Hello bloggers, I have missed you. I have backed off running a little in the hopes of giving my new medication some time to work. The other drug I was taking just had too many horrible side-effects and yet wasnt working well.  My knee and hips hurt all the time, and the joints in my feet and hands were swollen all the time.  So, now I am on Enbrel (I give myself a rather painful shot every week), and I have backed off the mileage a bit.  Things are much better after nearly 4 weeks.  My goal is to take easy for another week or two and then start increasing intensity a bit.  Fingers crossed, my doctor says he can get me to "90%" - I don't if he means 90% of where I was last year, or 90% of an average non-runner type?  My hope is the former ;-)

I have missed you, and just have been too depressed to keep up, for that selfishness I apologize.

I hope those of you getting ready to Boston are enjoying the warm weather!!!

1:50:34.  Hilly, hilly run.  I felt so good today, night and day my running friends.  The swelling in the joints of my hips is way way down, my back does not hurt, my feet (the toe joints) don't hurt, and the the only remaining niggling pain is in my knee.  And, I can get out of bed again, without feeling like I haven't slept in months ... yea!  I am so relieved, and not nearly as grouchy :)

It has been a way too warm winter, I know for those of you in the cold it sounds wonderful, but it has been a very dry winter, and does not bode well for the summer here - high fire danger already.  Anyway -- it is nice, but warm.

Have a wonderful week bloggers!

a little on the trail, a little on the road, a lot on the hills :)

So, it was sad, tonight Dean and I were BBQing and I saw a herd of about 7 deer.  I did not want to spook them - in case they ran out into the road, so I put the dogs inside and tried to be quiet.  about an hour later I heard a car hit one of them ... and the guy dragged the carcass to the side of the road right down near our driveway.  It was sad - and I told Dean that the dogs were going to be barking all night as the coyotes, bobcats, and maybe mountain lions came by the house to feast.  sure enough, barking all night long.  Then, on Monday morning (about 12 hours later) Dean went for a run, and after he got back I saw him wandering around the hillside beside our house.  Apparently all that was left of a whole deer was a "pile of guts" (Dean's words) and a trail of blood over the rocks that lead from the roadside to up the mountain.  Wow.

guest lecture today for a course at the U of A ... not a class I used to teach (thank goodness) - but a few of my old students were there!

The woman who teaches this class is a friend of mine - she received her PhD a few years after I did at the University of Colorado.  So -- after the class tonight we went out and had some dinner, it was fun.  Dean is out of town, so I was bacheloring it anyway :)

I felt a little better this weekend, so I took a chance and ran the hot, hilly route.   It is such a good workout, and I always feel so good if I can finish strong on this route.  Yea!

I think I am getting a little better every week, the new treatment is working well.  Very limited side-effects (it takes a little emotional strength to actually give myself the shot, but it is definitely worth this minor thing).  I am sometimes bummed, because I really am not sure I am ever going to be able to train again, but I am trying to just be grateful I can still run.  Well, I guess also grateful I can walk, and work, things were getting so bad a couple months ago I really wondered how long I was going to be able to do either.  So, compared to that, I am great :)

Happy Sunday bloggers!

yipee.  feeling nearly normal.  I am so happy.  Work though, well, as you can see by my lack of blogging, it is a bear.  I work too many hours.  It is a very stressful job.  I am sort of trying to figure out a way to find "work life" balance, but it is hard.  It looks almost like to find that balance, I might have to find a  new job.  More on that later :)

Still not wearing a watch, maybe this week!!

I have to tell you, despite all the challenges I have faced in my 51 years of being alive, the past 9 months have been some of the toughest.  It has been nearly 1 year since I started having symptoms, and nearly 8 months since my diagnosis.  There were so many days when I nearly cried because I couldn't even walk up one flight of stairs.  I could barely get out of bed in the morning, both because of the pain and the incredible fatigue.  I still did get out of bed, and despite the fact that it was sort of stupid, I still ran -- I am so very grateful that my stupidity did not actually result in permanent joint damage, as I am assuming since the swelling has gone down in most of my joints, and I can walk/run nearly 85% of the time without pain.  I felt worse than I have ever felt in my life, and I was certain it was never going to get better.

Even as I write this, not in a spirit of complaint, but rather in reflection, I realize that my case is not nearly as bad as so many others. I don't think I really ever realized what "chronic disease" meant.  I thought of diabetes, maybe chronic obesity, and I always felt badly for people who struggled with these things - but I certainly had no idea how life altering this sort of diagnosis was. And certainly, I was convinced, I am healthy, I eat right, I have the genetics so that I have never been seriously overweight, crimminy - I had run a 3:19 marathon for goodness sake - I had even missed the "bad cancer" lottery and did not have to undergo chemo, lose my breasts, or worst of all be faced with an uncertain future because of cancer (like some of the women I met during treatment).

There were days over the past few months when I was nearly confident that I was going to have to go on disability.  And, seriously, I could not believe it had happened so quickly.

But now, I am just so very grateful (again).  I have good health insurance that pays for my exorbitantly expensive medication, that WORKS, and I am almost back to my old self.  I have to be careful about being around people who are sick, I now am "immune compromised" - but I can run.  Only time will tell if I will be able to race/train again, but I can run.  So, I am very very lucky.

And, now I am back to fastrunningblog, so all is good :)

I'm very happy to hear you are doing better. It gives me hope for my better half, who has been going through what is essentially a chronic pain issue for the past year+ as well. You did not quit - despite having a thousand reasons to - and THAT is inspiring.

From Bonnie on Sat, May 17, 2014 at 17:09:24 from 64.119.33.134

oh man. Poor Andrea. It is hard, I feel for her. I will have to send her an email. It is amazing how these things take a toll on our overall outlook on life and affect us in ways that difficult to describe.

Thank you for your kind words, I am nothing if not stubborn :)

From Jake K on Sat, May 17, 2014 at 17:19:42 from 98.202.128.218

It goes so far beyond running. We deals with aches and pains all the time as athletes. I can't pretend to understand it - but watching her be in pain ALL the time (recently) has opened my eyes to how hard these chronic pain issues are. Yeah, you are stubborn (so is she), but that's the only way you can get through something like this. I admire the relentless determination. It's much harder than going and running intervals at the track. You're a tough cookie for hanging in there and getting back to the point where you are at now.

From Bonnie on Sat, May 17, 2014 at 18:08:40 from 64.119.33.134

interesting to hear you say that Jake, goodness knows, I have been thinking a lot about chronic pain over the past few months. It is something that I never actually appreciated. Even injuries, heartbreaking as they are (and I was EVEN lucky in that - since I really only had one injury that kept me from running more than a day or two) - are just so different. I think it is knowing there is an end? Sort of like the Tucson summer :) ha ha. And, when so much of your life revolves around running - it sort of affects your entire outlook.

I am just glad to be "back" (just in time for 100F days!)

I don't know if this is 15, but it is probably close ... Very hilly the whole way with about 35 mins on the trails.  Dean had a new pair of Oakley sunglasses that I have adopted (e.g., stolen) to wear on my runs.  I have never worn sunglasses when running before - wow I can't believe how much better it is!  Especially in the glare of the 'started your run too late during the summer' day ☺. It was 90F when I finished my run at 10AM ...

Happy Sunday bloggers!
